Voice of a Century

This year Vogue celebrated their 100th birthday!

The 100 years was celebrated by doing a numerous of things that were out of the ordinary.

Vogue obviously had a prestigious birthday party but they also threw a party for their loyal readers at Burlington Arcade. I was lucky enough to attend this event and I wrote a blog all about that, here.

The BBC also did a two-part documentary giving the viewers a rare insight into Vogue and Alexandra Shulman the Editor-in-chief (but I’m sure you knew that).

In the documentary everyone was speculating about who would be the face of the 100th birthday edition. Alexandra teased viewers and the crew that the cover would simply be white with 100 written on the cover. Little did we know, the cover had been planned and photographed months previous. Kate Middleton was the face and I really don’t think you could have got beaten that! Having the Duchess of Cambridge on the cover was an incredible feat and soon became a collectors edition.

Now Vogue have bought out a book to celebrate the century!

An anthology like no other!

“For 100 years British Vogue has set the scene in fashion, beauty, portraiture and lifestyle. It has discovered and championed young designers, writers, artists, photographers and models; reported on changing patterns in fashion and social life; documented wars and cultural change and presented fashion from the most extraordinary places. Simultaneously reflecting and shaping British culture and history, its pages have been a vivid record of the times.”

This book truly is a work of art. It is very expensive but once you see it you can see see exactly why. 1,916 copies have been created and the work and detail that has gone into them are stunning. Each book has been hand signed by at least 8 contributors and craftsman-bound.

The book arrives boxed up to perfection. It has it’s own dust bag and luxury box, which has a pull-back cover that hides a Vogue illustration.

When you open up the dust bag, you can just feel the excitement start to build and you can clearly see why this book is what it is! In my house we were all gathered round, all able to appreciate the beauty of this artwork.

Each page is excellently put together with receipts from the 40’s and transparent pages with sketches and ideas. This book will be an heir loom and a classic for years to come and I am thrilled I managed to get my hands on one!

Kate Moss, Alexandra Shulman and Patrick Demarchelier were just a few of the famous names to have hand signed my copy. All these things add up to make this book a privilege to own – I can’t wait to show the grandchildren!

Genesis Publications have done a fantastic job and if you want to see what all the fuss is about then head over to their website to see video’s, descriptions and contributors: www.genesis-publications.com
